For the Mandatory Plan, the academic unit will send an eligibility file to the Bursar’s Office to bill and enroll the student in the SHIP for the academic policy year.  Note: If the student plans to enroll a dependent, please see dependents section below. Once enrolled in the mandatory plan for the Fall, the student will also be enrolled for the Spring/Summer as long as the student is on the Spring eligibility file/bill. If the student wants to not be enrolled for the Spring (i.e. want to waive), then the student must request a change on the Student Blue website and are required to submit a waiver during the waiver period (same as enrollment period.)

For the Voluntary plan, the student or eligible participant must enroll for the academic policy year on the Student Blue website. There are two payment options A) for the full year upfront or B) by semester If by semester, then the Fall premium is paid at the time of enrollment. To continue enrollment for Spring/Summer, you will have the option to ask BCBS to draft your account for the spring semester payment automatically when enrolled in the Fall, if you decline,  Student Blue will mail a premium notice in late Fall.   Note: If the policy is paid for the full year upfront, and you graduate in December or May, coverage continues until the policy year expires on 7/31/.

Dependents-

Mandatory Plan- student must enroll themselves and dependents under the Mandatory Plan for the academic policy year on the Student Blue website.  The academic unit will send an eligibility file to the Bursar’s Office to bill the student for the academic policy year.  All dependents pay by semester directly to Student Blue.  Once the dependent has paid the Fall premium, at the time of enrollment, Student Blue will bill your dependent for the Spring/Summer coverage in late Fall. If the premium is not paid, then coverage will be terminated at the end of the Fall semester.  Note: If the student is not eligible for the Spring/Summer semester, then your dependent coverage will terminate as well.

Voluntary Plan- student or eligible participant and dependents must enroll for the academic policy year on the Student Blue website. There are two payment options A) for the full year upfront or B) by semester. If by semester, then the Fall premium is paid at the time of enrollment. To continue enrollment for Spring/Summer, Student Blue will mail a premium notice in late Fall.  If the premium is not paid, then coverage will be terminated at the end of the Fall semester.

For OPT participants-  F-1 students work through the Office of International Education  to enroll with a paper application during open enrollment period.  Contact StudentBlue for appropriate application.  Voluntary premium paid direct to Student Blue via monthly bank draft.

Postdoc fellows and J1 Scholars- Postdoc fellows and J1 Scholars work through the Office of International Education  to request application from Student Blue and OIE verifies eligibility. Scholars enroll with a paper application during open enrollment period.  Contact StudentBlue for appropriate application.  Voluntary premium paid direct to StudentBlue via monthly bank draft.

Co-Opt- the student must enroll for the academic policy year on the Student Blue website.

J-1/F-1 Interns- Interns work through the Office of International Education to enroll with a paper application during open enrollment period.  Contact StudentBlue for appropriate application.  Voluntary premium paid direct to Student Blue via monthly bank draft.

Waivers- For those that waiver and then want to purchase insurance, the student would elect online to cancel the existing waiver (during the waiver/enrollment period); once that is done the student would be able enroll for the academic policy year on the StudentBlue website.
